Phoenix at the Palace

I was totally blown away by the Phoenix show at the Palace on Monday. Despite the many chicken legs on stage, there was something incredibly powerful about this show. I have been a Phoenix fan for years but only just saw them live for the first time. Thinking the key tracks would come last, I took my time to get to the gig only to make a mad dash when I walked in the door hearing Lisztermania exploding from the stage.
I took my usual vantage point on the third floor but afterwards regretted not getting into the overexcited crowd below. From my birds eye view I could see how pumped everyone was. The most electric gig I have been to since…probably last time the YYY’s were here. The band were amazing. Focused, having fun and getting involved with the crowd. They said a few times what an amazing crowd it was – to be expected really but unlike most circumstances, I genuinely felt they meant it. Word from an internal unnamed source after the gig said it was their most rewarding show this tour.
In being critical, the lights were a bit much. The strobing was too prolonged. Anyone on pills at those moments would definitely have been freaking out. But there was one very striking moment when three lights intercepted Thomas Mars (vocals) so it looked like he was at the center of a six pointed star. Pretty cool.
Too Young was splendid but the real treat was 1901 with a relapsing extension at the end. Yay. We love you Phoenix.
