The Next Pop Phenomenon?

October 15th 2009 13:17
Alexandra Burke
Alexandra Burke

Maybe. I have been debating with myself over the last couple of weeks whether this song was worthy of a post, encase you left your brain behind, I went with Yes. The justification I gave myself was the question of whether Alexandra Burke has the making of the next pop Phenomenon. The reason I had to justify is that this song is even a little bit to mainstream for me. Alexandra was the winner of the UK TV show The X Factor last year, with her first single, a ballad, she broke pretty much every record their was to break(Chart Wise). I imagined with her first album that she would head down that same 'musical path', but it would seem she has gone for a more up-tempo pop track. The song is called Bad Boys and it looks like it will debut at No.1 this weekend in the UK. The track is also getting a worldwide release including the US, so is Alexandra Burke heading for stardom? Check out the video below and let tell us what you think.

Meghan Tonjes is her name and covers is her style. We have been following Meghan for a while now on her youtube channel, where she performs a range of her own material as well as some great covers. With just her guitar, her beautiful voice and some good recording skills, Meghan shows the world that independent artist's have a place in the mixed up world of the music industry. The latest cover from Meghan is of American Pop/R&B artist Ciara and her most recent hit Love Sex And Magic. Check out the cover bellow as well as the original and another favourite of ours where Meghan takes on Lily Allen.

British electro duo La Roux who are touring the country at the moment are back with their 4th single I'm Not Your Toy. This track doesn't reach the heights of In For the kill or Quicksand, but it should still keep fans happy with the same iconic sound. The video for I'm Not Your Toy is interesting, but nothing that special. Make up your own mind and check it out below.

Parralox

Slowly but surely over the past couple of years, Aussie duo Parralox has been hypnotising the world with their good grooves and pop sensibilities. One half of the duo, John Von Ahlen has been producing pop in Australia for goodness knows how long, in the past working with the likes of Delta Goodrem, Olivia Newton-John, Real Life and even Gina G. Teaming up with young Amii, he's crafting pop that's international, slick and very addictive. Parralox is about to release a brand new EP - Hotter, Check out the video for Hotter below.

Breathe

G-Dragon
G-Dragon

First he was a Heartbreaker and now he can't breathe! Man G-Dragon has got some serious problems. Yes we are back in the world of K-pop. It was only a few days ago I posted his first single of his new album Heartbreaker, now the 'king of K-pop' is back with the a new video for his second single Breathe. G- Dragons music is very so-so for me, he produces very catchy, big sounding tracks, but their is something about it which feels like too much of a ego trip. He is like the Korean Kanye West for me and I am still on the fence. Check out the somewhat familiar looking Breathe vid below.

UPDATE: Since posting I have gone and listened to G-Dragon's full album and I am no longer on the fence. His album tracks are impressive, a really interesting mix of styles of music, much better than his singles. If you are interested you can check out some of the album tracks below the Breathe video.

I Will Be Here!

Tiesto
I Will Be Here

Tiesto is a Dutch Dance Veteran, try saying that quickly three times, who began taking over the european dance scene in the early ninties. I have always respected Tiesto, but I wouldn't say I was a fan, until now. For his new album the Dutch Dance Veteran has teamed up with Sneaky Sound System who feature on his first single, I Will Be Here. This track stays on track of Tiesto's progressive trance style, but it's sooo better than the average because Miss Connie Mitchell is singing! Check out the song and very cool vid below!

Who doesn't love themselves some MSTRKRFT! I sure do. MSTRKRFT, pronounced Master-Craft is electronic duo from Canada who we have featured many times in the past and who are famous not only for their own material but for their talented remixing skills as well. The Duo released their second album a few months back and the latest single from the album is called Heartbraker. The track features american singer John Legend and certainly is one of my favourites of these very talented dudes. Check out the video below!

Dizzee Rascal
Dizzee Rascal

Dizzee Rascal is what I call a Yo-Yo Artist, someone who I go through periods of liking and disliking. Currently I am in a Semi-Dislike state, that said I am posting his new single Holiday. I am not a huge fan of the lyrics or Dizzee himself in this song, the reason I am posting it is because I am impressed with the preduction of the track. The song was created by the mastermind that is Calvin Harris, Holiday is a high energy dance track for which Calvin has become famous for. As I said the lyrics are average and so is the video but watch it and just listen to the production of the track, especially from 2:30 onwards. 4 Words-REACH FOR THE LAZERS!

Whitney Houston

Who dosen't love a bit of Whitney? Well she's back with a new album and while I am not a massive fan of Whitney Houston, she has her moments. Her first single from her latest album is called Million Dollar Bill. Written by Alicia Keys, Million Dollar Bill is not a major hit but it is a well done mid-tempo comeback single, not to mention it's quite catchy. Check out the track and video below.

Super Junior-M
Super Junior-M

No, it's not what you expected! I bet you were thinking oh it's another post about K-pop. Well your wrong! Well sort of..... I've talked about Super Junior in the past, but just to catch you up the are the biggest Boy Band in the world with 13 members originating from South Korea. To cut a long story short, the record company behind the group decided that since 7 of the members spoke Chinese they would create a Sub-group for the Chinese market called Super Junior-M. They have just released a new Mini-Album and the first single is called Super Girl. Yes it is cheesey pop, like most of the stuff I post on this site, but it is sooo good. Even if you don't understand Mandarin like me, you can still get into it! Check out the video below!

K-pop fans! See if you can pick out the cameo in the video!

Amy Pearson
Amy Pearson

Amy Pearson is a name you might of heard of, but most likely not. She is an English born, Australian singer, who released her debut album Who I Am in 2008. To be totally honest I wasn't a fan of her music and not many other people were either her album only reaching #39 on the charts and her single peaked at #19. Well her luck might of changed with Her first single, Butterfingers of her new album due out early next year. Changing her sound and image a fair bit I think she could be on the verge of having a hit! Butterfingers is one of those songs that grows on you with every listen, eventually you can't get it out of your head. Ch-Ch-Check out the new vid below.

Natalie Imbruglia
Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia strikes me as one of those artists who don't really get the recognition or the accolades they deserve. While i wouldn't say that I am a 'fan' but I think she makes some cool music now an then. Her first new album in 4 years is out at the start of next month titled, Come to life, the first single of it is called Want. A track written by Chris martin of Coldplay, Want is a return to the sort of music I like from Natalie. The video for Want was released today and it shows a very personal and sexy side of Natalie. I can’t get this song out of my head! Mini Viva is a new British pop duo who is managed by Simon Fuller (Spice Girls, David Beckham, So You Think You Can Dance and Idol Creator). Besides the bands bad name, they have a sound and image which is mainstream yet still unique. Their first single is called Left My Heart In Tokyo, produced by Xenomania (Kylie, Cher, Pet Shop Boys) is sure to be a hit in the Uk already at the top of most radio playlists.
